How to clean and maintain UPVC sash windows?

December 18, 2021

Regularly caring for your UPVC sash windows means that you’ll have good functioning windows possibly for some decades. Modern UPVC sash windows use the latest technology, which adds a variety of benefits to the window, including sound reduction, heat insulation and improved aesthetics.

In order to maintain a high standard in function and aesthetics, it is important to regularly maintain the sash windows. If you have recently upgraded your windows and would like to find out ways of maintaining the windows then read on. We’ve put together some tips on how to look after your new UPVC sash windows so that they’ function well and look great for many years to come.

Clean the frame

As with any window, cleaning the window frames will leave them “shiny” and clear of dirt. Using non-abrasive cleaners or dirt-free cloth will avoid any build up of dirt that may otherwise be difficult to remove if left untouched for some time.

Ensure the sliders are free from dirt

Dirt will inevitably get into the window frame when left open. As dirt builds up, it can affect the function of the window and could possibly lead to damage to the mechanism. Regular cleaning of the sliding channels will ensure the function of the window is in good working condition. Simply hoovering or using wipes can reduce build up of dirt and debris.

Caring for fixed and movable parts

In order to maintain the quality of the windows, regular cleaning of all fixed and movable hardware parts such as fixings and handles is recommended. This will improve the lifetime of the parts but also the whole window. Keep the moving parts clean from any dust and dirt to reduce possibility of friction and deterioration.

Lubrication

As with other window styles, lubrication ensures a smooth operation and increases the lifespan of the window. However, it is important not to over lubricate the window since excessive use of lubricants can clog up moving parts and increase the friction of the mechanism. Annual lubrication is sufficient to keep your sash window in good working condition.

Clean glass

Glass usually covers the most visible area of the window. Regular cleaning with non-abrasive cleaners, glass polishers and cloths will give a bright and sparking appearance to the whole window.

Reduce condensation

The glass is usually the point where the cool air outside and the warm moist air inside meet and creates a form of condensation on the inside surface of the glass. This is in most cases inevitable. Regularly ventilating the room by opening your windows where possible will reduce the build up of condensation.

Regularly implementing the tips above will ensure that your UPVC sash windows are looking great and working just fine as if you’ve just upgraded.
